신약성서는 인류의 종교역사에서 가장 영향력 있는 문헌이요, 기독교 신앙과 신학연구에서 핵심적 위치를 차지하는 서적이다. 이런 책, 신약 문헌을 탐구하는 분야인 ‘신약학’은, 신약성서 속에 담긴 여러 텍스트들을 가능한 모든 학문적 연구방법들을 동원하여 이해하려 노력하는 학문이다. 신학적, 역사적, 문학적, 철학적 방법 등, 온갖 현대의 도구들을 활용하여 신약의 다양한 텍스트들을 해명하려는 것이다.

신약학은 미래에 목회와 신학의 영역에서 활동하게 될 사람들에게는 두 말할 나위 없이 압도적 중요성을 갖는 탐구 분야이지만, 서양사, 문학, 종교, 예술과 철학 등의 영역에 관심을 갖고 공부하는 이들에게도 본질적이며 포괄적인 시야를 제공해 줄 것이다.

신약학도는 신약성서 본문의 배경과 신학 등에 관하여 널리 연구하며 학습하는 기회를 갖게 될 것이다. 이를테면, 신약이 기록된 원어에 관하여 공부하고, 신약이 형성된 다양한 종교적, 문화적, 사회적 컨텍스트를 탐구하며, 신약 각개 문헌들의 저자가 품었던 신념들에 관한 성찰을 깊이 있게 해나가게 된다는 것이다.

The New Testament is the most influential collection of texts in the history of human religion and is central to the study of Christian theology. New Testament Studies is the discipline that seeks to understand these texts using a variety of methods, such as theological, historical, literary, and philosophical.

To anyone training for ministerial or theological work, its importance is obvious. But the field also provides fundamental reference points for students of western history, literature, religion, art, and philosophy.

Students will examine and explore the theology and the background of New Testament texts. Students will have the opportunity to study the language in which the texts were written, to investigate the diverse religious, cultural and social contexts in which these texts were shaped, and to probe the beliefs that inspired their authors.
